V5 Auditor FAQ

What is the V5 Auditor?

The V5 Auditor is a complete "hands off" free software tool for monitoring an Urchin installation developed by Actual Metrics. The tool allows you to be notified of any daily processing issues in Urchin by email or through your monitoring software. Some of the features include:
  • Threshold checking which will alert you if any profile's daily/hourly sessions or pageviews drops below a specific number that you specify.
  • It's easily scheduled to run daily on both Windows and Unix via cron or task scheduler.
  • Automatically integrates with common monitoring software like Nagios.
  • Allows you to choose which profiles are monitored so you don't get unwanted alerts for test profiles.
  • Can be run from the command line or scheduled with batch.
  • Scan functionality that can check every page of a profile's web site for the UTM tracking code.

Why would I need it?

System Administrators - The V5 Auditor is perfect for system administrators who want to be pro-actively alerted when there are any processing errors in the Urchin system instead of manually logging in every day. This allows them to fix issues before anyone sees incorrect or missing reports. The V5 Auditor will save time by only sending an email when there are actual warnings or errors, so you won’t receive unnecessary emails.

Marketers - The V5 Auditor is also ideal for any marketing/business folks who want to set pageview or session thresholds for certain profiles and be alerted if these values fall below a certain set minimum value. This allows them to stay on top of web site performance and marketing initiatives.

How can I download/install it?

We provide the tool free of charge off of our download site. To ensure the quality of the tool we create a unique build for each customer that uses their Urchin 5 serial license code. If you'd like us to create a free build for you please call us or fill out the below contact form.

What version of Urchin does it use?

The V5 Auditor works with version 5.7.X and above.

What Operating System Configurations does it run on?

The V5 Auditor runs on most Windows and Unix compatible systems. Basically, it should run on any platform/system that runs Urchin.

How much CPU/Memory does it require?

The V5 Auditor has a minimal CPU and memory footprint. With a large environment it will tend to run longer instead of using more CPU and memory.

How does it work?

The V5 Auditor interacts with the Urchin reporting CGI and the delivered utilities such as uconf-export and uconf-driver to gather reporting output and configuration information. The V5 Auditor also uses bundled Perl binaries to scan the Urchin history logs, create reports, and send emails and fetch http documents.

What else does it do?

The V5 Auditor comes with an additional utility called the UTM SCAN. This allows you to scan each page of a web site for the presence of the UTM tracking code. This can be run ad hoc to scan all pages of your site or scheduled with the normal daily V5 Auditor reporting to ensure any newly created or updated pages are not missing the tracking code.
